Limited edition giclee prints I have been captivated since childhood by the peculiar beauty of coastal southern New Jersey, its interior pine barrens, and the surpassingly strange communities that dot the Delaware Bay. From time to time I attempted to settle elsewhere, including places conventionally regarded as more compelling than rural New Jersey, yet I always returned. It struck me as I composed this brief narrative that photography brings me a step closer to understanding the ineffable attraction of home. My interest in digital photography as an artistic medium evolved from my professional training in diagnostic radiology, a field marked by rapid advances in computer assisted imaging of the human body. Although exposure to the intricacies of medical imaging certainly eased my transition to digital photography, I regard the hardware and software of 21st century imaging as tools, nothing more. I am philosophically comfortable with a degree of computer embellishment as long as it serves my original emotional connection to the subject. I shoot in camera RAW mode, and then make liberal use of Adobe Photoshop CS2 as my digital darkroom. To that end, I am intrigued by high dynamic range images merged from multiple different exposures to achieve a painterly effect, and employ a variety of digital filters in an attempt to capture the mood of selenium toned, platinum, and silver gelatin photographs from the heyday of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. All the prints are made using giclee methodology with archival pigmented inks and papers. Thank you for visiting this site. I hope you enjoy the photographs. |
