Q&A with our Master Printer
Interviewer: Tell us a little a about your background.
MP: I have a college degree in Commercial Photography from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. After graduating in 1994 I moved to Los Angeles and took jobs working for service bureaus, pre-press houses and large photo labs as a high end digital retoucher/color specialist. In 1994 we acquired the Iris 3047, considered the first Giclee printer. Since then my work has been assisting the most prestigious ad agencies, artists and photographers with their imaging needs in New York and Los Angeles. I have a long list of clients, all well known names in advertising, art and photography. For confidentiality purposes I am not able to post these names on our web site but I will be happy to detail everything over the phone.
Interviewer: What distinguishes your company from the competition?
MP: Our competition is so varied it is hard to generalize; there are very capable and experienced companies doing great work. On the other hand I see people with money to spare who jump into the business with no professional experience. This is a very specialized field and it takes many years and talent to be successful. We offer quality, value and personal attention. We understand imaging, traditional photographic and 4 color printing. We are traditionally trained in photographic printing, both color and black and white. Our prices and service are unsurpassed in the industry. If you are not happy with our work, we are not happy.
Interviewer: Where do you see Giclee printing going?
MP: With the development of better digital cameras, in conjunction with artists' desire to market their work with profit growth in mind, the field is bound to expand. We plan to cater to these fields by offering incentives and networking to help our customers. At a local level, we are already implementing these strategies.
Interviewer: Can you give us a workflow example once the client sends an image for printing?
MP: Let's assume we receive a painting; the very first step is to talk to the customer to get a feel or what they are after. We capture the painting in the studio with our digital systems. We output a small proof. At this point we may make an overall color correction and subsequently we locally mask parts of the image to individually color correct areas that require particular attention. Keep in mind that different painting pigments respond to scanners, film or digital cameras differently than the eye. When satisfied with the results a proof is returned to the customer for approval or final corrections. In the case of a photograph that is sent to us for output, we follow the same steps except that we may scan the original. When digital files are FTP' d to us we require something to match it to or we will use our artistic discretion...It is important to communicate with the artist during the process. Customer service, as in all businesses, is a make or break issue for a successful relationship.
