In a field that was practically born less than twenty years ago, we are pioneers in the medium.
As with the evolution in any form of technology, giclee printing has been refined and the early trial and errors are a matter of the past. In addition the technology has changed so much that unless one keeps with current trends, our competitive edge would soon disappear. It is very possible to create great fine art reproduction by manipulating color even when the original has pigments out of printer range: this is what we call "perceptual color matching"; if a cobalt blue in a painting can' t possibly be printed, we can achieve something which is as pleasing to the eye and perceived as that particular color. This is a skill learned by few printmakers and requires a sensibility that no color matching software will ever be able to simulate.
We understand the choice of a giclee printing service is a daunting task. There are many companies (including large corporations) that have jumped into the giclee printing bandwagon. If the ultimate goal is to have an image printed without precise color correction and with generic materials it is fine to go with pretty much anyone.
Nevertheless, it is essential to understand that giclee printing is a skill learned over time dealing with many forms of fine art reproduction, different duplication technologies. We are perfectionists and never happy with our results until we feel the best possible giclee is achieved. In addition, we continually test all our substrates and machines. This process is time consuming but necessary to stay on top of the field. Do not be afraid to ask questions about experience, pricing such as setup fees, shipping and handling. Because of the popularity of this method of reproduction we have seen a great variety in quality and service offered by the competition.
We have worked with lithography presses, silver halide (traditional and digital) systems, drum scanners, high end digital backs. Working in California in the early 90's, our printmaker started printing large format giclees with the Iris 3047. We have years of traditional color and black and white photo printing experience. We are artists ourselves. This is what gives our company a broad view of the evolution and current status of giclee printing technology. We are happy to share this knowledge with our clients so they can make an informed choice best suited to their needs. Do not hesitate to visit us at our giclee printing location or call us if you have any questions.
